    About Us

    Our Mission

At the Western New York Refugee Access Center, our mission is to ensure that migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers are treated with dignity and respect as they navigate the challenges of resettlement and adaptation.

    Our Vision

To foster enduring, positive change within our community by providing culturally and linguistically appropriate case management and building strong, supportive connections through our Family-to-Family Mentoring program.

No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.

    What We Do

    Case Management

Wraparound services for immigrants are holistic, coordinated supports designed to help individuals and families navigate life in a new country and achieve long-term stability.

These services work together to support immigrant families in becoming self-sufficient, connected, and empowered in their new communities.

Case Managers will work to connect clients with essential services including housing, employment, education, healthcare, and legal assistance.

    Family-to-Family Mentoring

Family-to-family mentoring is a community-based support model that pairs established local families with newly arrived immigrant or refugee families. The goal is to foster meaningful relationships, promote cultural exchange, and help newcomers navigate their new environment.

    • Builds trust and community connection
    • Accelerates adjustment and independence
    • Fosters long-term integration and belonging

Families will be paired using a matching process based around shared interests, backgrounds, and locations. All families, new arrivals and mentors, will receive basic orientation and cultural sensitivity training. Families will meet and interact regularly to build relationships through educational activities, support groups, and community events.

    Meet Our Board members

    Oumar Adam, MSW

In 2008, at just 12 years old, Oumar Hassaballah left his home in Central Africa and moved to New York City. Like many immigrants, he arrived with hope in his heart—but also fear. Everything was unfamiliar: the language, the people, the place. It was a feeling he would never forget.   His father had been living in NYC for seven years before Oumar joined him, but even with family by his side, the challenges of starting over in a new country were immense. Oumar remembers the long waits for translation services—sometimes sitting in offices for over five hours, only to be turned away and told, “Come back another day.” These moments stayed with him. He saw firsthand how difficult it was for immigrants and refugees to access the services they needed.

Oumar graduated from Bronx International High School in 2014 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, concentrating in Child and Adolescent Development, from Buffalo State College in 2018. His passion for helping others led him to continue his education, earning a master’s in social work from Daemen College in 2022. Through his work with children and families, Oumar witnessed time and again how refugee communities were underserved. Determined to make a difference, in 2025, he co-founded the Western New York Refugee Access Center—a space rooted in compassion and shaped by his lived experience. With this center, Oumar brought his vision to life, dedicating himself fully to uplifting and empowering his community.
